| In Feng Shui, the master bedroom has become the most important room in the house, as you live at least 1/3 of your life in this room, just by sleeping. Add the daily routine of getting dressed, reading a book, and communicating with your family, you now use this room in your home more than any other.
Since every part of your life is connected, the quality of rest and rejuvenation you receive while in your bedroom is crucial to your happiness, productivity and overall health. When you include the delight of romance, a peaceful and uninterrupted sleep, and time for quiet reflection, you have now created an environment that ideally comforts you at the end of a busy and stressful day. No room becomes more important to your overall
well-being.
As fall approaches, this is the perfect time to redecorate your master bedroom to create the oasis and spa like surroundings that provide maximum comfort and serenity. Begin with the placement of the bed. The ideal location is where you would have a view of the door, without being directly in front of it. This positioning of your bed is called the position of power in feng shui. Few people are comfortable when they can’t see the door. It can create an uneasy feeling of being vulnerable if you cannot see a person entering a room.
You also want to avoid the bed being placed on the same side as the door, causing one of the individuals in a relationship to have to journey all the way around to the other side to get into bed. To nurture equality in relationships, you must honor the instinctual need for comfort and safety by creating easy accessibility to both sides of the bed. Add a nightstand and lamp on each side of the bed to build relationships, even if you are single. If you don’t want to hold onto your single status indefinitely, create a bedroom that accommodates more than one! Add a lamp on each end table that has a three-way switch and this will automatically give you more options to create an ideal atmosphere for reading or relaxation.
The impact of color can affect our mood and energy level. For a restful sleep, try a hue with warm tones for a calming effect. Select colors that are found in the skin tones of people around the world, such as pink, beige, tan, yellow, and caramel. Cooler colors, such as blue and green, may take away from the coziness of a bedroom. When cool tones exist, choose accessories with warmer tones to balance the room. This also applies to bed linens. Incorporate the same warm colors and always select high-thread-count and natural fabrics. In feng shui, one of the most intimate relationships you can cultivate is the one with yourself. Treat yourself with the luxury of soft and sensual fabrics that allow you to design your perfect “nest.”
Now get a view from the bed to observe what will be your first and last impressions before waking up or going to sleep. Anything that carries unwanted associations and memories should be taken out. This includes office desks, workout equipment, laundry baskets, and books used for study and training. Return your bedroom back to its original purpose. If you have a TV in the bedroom, then most likely you are not spending quality conversation time with your partner, creating intimate settings, or allowing your mind to void of distractions, reminders, or stressful images. Most feng shui practitioners will encourage you to leave the TV in the family room and have no TV in the master bedroom. TV’s are active energy and do not contribute to peace and tranquility.
If the view from your bed includes a sea of photos of family members and friends, remember that every object is alive and is talking to you all the time. Imagine the conversations each person in the photo is having with you prior to going to bed. You forgot to call your mom back or you haven’t responded to your cousin’s wedding invitation. Instead, create a spa like experience when choosing artwork and accessories that engages and delights each of your senses: sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste. This includes your choice of pillows, candles, fresh flowers, and decorative pieces that restore your energy and create sensual, serene and romantic images. The master bedroom is the place to renew mind, body and spirit.
If you have any trouble sleeping and you have removed all of the active electronics from your bedroom, the next thing to consider minimizing or removing all mirrors. The function of a mirror is to enhance the size of a room, amplify existing light, and restoring balance to lop-sided architectural features. While a mirror doubles the abundance of any room, they are active energy and can disturb your sleep. You can cover a mirror at night with a beautiful scarf or shawl, or “curtain” off the mirror if they line your closet doors. You want to minimize as much as possible the “awake” energy a mirror can stimulate.
Any form of clutter is your bedroom will contribute to stale energy and remind you of chores undone. If there is any room that you keep tidy, this room should be the priority. Keep the room simple, lean, and free of collections of art and accessories. Every item contributes to keeping a room “awake.” Make sure there is a sufficient amount of space to walk around without bumping into furniture.
When you want to attract and keep romance in your life, choose items that inspire you, such as sculptures of two people intertwined or a photograph of a happy time with a partner or friend. Arranging your accessories in pairs encourages a twosome and anchors the intention to create relationships.
To honor your need to recharge your batteries and wake up energized to start the day, turn your master bedroom into your personal paradise.
